Background of the Study: Flooding is a common natural disaster in Nigeria, and Kogi State, situated at the confluence of the Niger and Benue Rivers, is particularly vulnerable to frequent and devastating floods (Obi et al., 2024). Flood-related health emergencies can cause a range of problems, including waterborne diseases, trauma, and the spread of infectious diseases, placing significant pressure on healthcare systems. Nurses play a critical role in managing flood-related health emergencies, from providing direct patient care to preventing the spread of diseases through sanitation and education.

Despite the increasing frequency of floods in Kogi State, little attention has been paid to evaluating nurses' knowledge and practices in managing flood-related health emergencies. This study seeks to assess the preparedness, knowledge, and practices of nurses in Kogi State in handling such emergencies, with the goal of identifying areas for improvement and strengthening their ability to respond to flood-related health crises.

Statement of the Problem: Kogi State has faced several severe flooding events in recent years, which have placed immense strain on local hospitals and healthcare facilities. Nurses are often tasked with addressing a wide range of health issues related to floods, including disease outbreaks, injuries, and psychological trauma. However, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding of nurses' preparedness, knowledge, and the challenges they face in managing flood-related health emergencies in Kogi State. This study seeks to fill this gap by evaluating the nurses' readiness and capacity to manage such situations.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the knowledge of nurses in Kogi State on handling flood-related health emergencies.
  2. To assess the practices of nurses in providing care during flood-related health emergencies.
  3. To identify the challenges faced by nurses in managing flood-related health emergencies in Kogi State.

Research Questions:

  1. What is the level of knowledge among nurses in Kogi State regarding flood-related health emergencies?
  2. How do nurses in Kogi State practice care in response to flood-related health emergencies?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in managing flood-related health emergencies in Kogi State?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Nurses with formal training in flood-related health emergencies will demonstrate higher levels of knowledge and preparedness.
  2. The lack of adequate infrastructure and resources negatively impacts nurses' ability to manage flood-related health emergencies in Kogi State.
  3. Nurse-led community outreach programs can significantly reduce the incidence of flood-related diseases in Kogi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: This study will be conducted in hospitals and healthcare facilities across Kogi State. The limitations include the variation in training and resources across different hospitals, which may influence nurses' practices and preparedness.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Flood-related health emergencies: Health crises resulting from flooding, including waterborne diseases, injuries, and outbreaks of infections.
  • Nurses' preparedness: The readiness of nurses to respond effectively to flood-related health emergencies based on their knowledge, training, and resources.
  • Flood management practices: The specific actions taken by nurses during a flood emergency, including patient care, disease prevention, and coordination with other health agencies.
